5 ways to save fuel in South Africa

1

Check your tyres

Monthly, when cold, at the pressure on the driver’s door sticker. Soft tyres cost fuel.

2

Drive smoothly

Pull away gently, look far ahead, roll towards red robots. Use cruise control on the open road.

3

Combine trips

One longer round beats several short ones on a cold engine. Avoid peak traffic when you can.

4

Don’t idle

Waiting more than a short while? Switch off if it’s safe. No need to warm up for minutes.

5

Service & lighten

Service on time, empty the boot, remove empty roof racks.

Litres ÷ km × 100 = ℓ/100 km

Measure this for 6 tanks. Your own numbers beat anyone’s promise.

Step 3 · optional

Ready for more kilometres? Test X-Caps.

A fuel catalyst for all fuel engines, including diesel. One cap treats 12–20 litres. South African drivers like Deepa report noticeably more kilometres per tank; your logbook will show you what it does in your car.

From 7.7 to 9.4 km per litre

Fuel-saving questions

What is the easiest way to save fuel in South Africa?

Start with the free habits: keep your tyres at the recommended pressure, accelerate and brake gently, combine trips, avoid long idling and keep your car serviced. Then measure your consumption in litres per 100 km so you can see what actually works for your car.

How do I calculate my car’s fuel consumption?

Fill the tank to the top and zero your trip meter. At the next fill-up, divide the litres you bought by the kilometres you drove and multiply by 100. That is your consumption in litres per 100 km. Lower is better.

Does using the aircon use more fuel?

Yes, the aircon puts extra load on the engine. In slow town traffic, opening the windows usually uses less fuel. At highway speeds, open windows create drag, so the aircon on a moderate setting is often the better choice.

When does the fuel price change in South Africa?

Fuel prices are adjusted monthly, usually on the first Wednesday of the month, based on international oil prices and the rand/dollar exchange rate.

Do fuel additives like X-Caps actually work?

Results differ from car to car. The manufacturer states X-Caps can help increase mileage by up to 8–12%. The honest way to find out is to measure: use the 6-Tank Test and compare three tanks without and three tanks with the product.
